Liberals Commit to Appointing National Fire Advisor
April 23, 2007
OTTAWA - A Liberal government will appoint a National Fire Advisor to coordinate Fire Service emergency response across the country, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion announced today.
"Canada's firefighters courageously risk their lives every day to ensure our communities are safe places to live and work," said Mr. Dion. "These people are Canadian heroes, and by establishing the office of National Fire Advisor, we are helping them to better carry out their work."
A Liberal government will commit to work with the provinces to establish the office of National Fire Advisor, which will help the Prime Minister enhance coordination, in full respect of the role of provinces, municipalities and firefighters themselves. The National Fire Advisor will be key to ensuring that Canada is ready to respond to both domestic and international emergencies and act as a liaison with other federal departments and agencies, including the military.
The establishment of a National Fire Advisor responds to key concerns about fire services emergency coordination expressed by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC). The CAFC has said that the creation of such a body will greatly improve the ability to carry out advance planning for a coordinated and standardized approach to emergency responses across Canada - an ability which is currently severely curtailed due to poor inter-jurisdictional planning and coordination.
"Firefighters are on the front lines in almost every emergency in communities all across the country," said Mr. Dion. "The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to providing them with the coordination and support they need to continue to protect their fellow Canadians."
