February 16, 2007 - Thousands of fire fighters, police officers, paramedics, and members of the public displayed their support for fallen Brothers Harold Lessard and Tom Nichols by attending a memorial service that was organized by IAFF Local 867 in cooperation with the Winnipeg Fire/Paramedic service and City officials. Hundreds of members from Ontario made the trip, which emphasized the close relationship between our brothers and sisters in Winnipeg and our Ontario members. OPFFA President Fred LeBlanc stated, " I was pleased with the number of Ontario members who made this trip in support of the families, injured fire fighters, and the Winnipeg local who have become close friends with many of us. I know that each and every member wishes they could be here but I know that we are all holding the families and fire fighters in our hearts and prayers."
It was a fitting tribute to Winnipeg's heroes. There were many moving speeches including Brother Nichol's son and daughter, the Mayor of Winnipeg, and IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. The families were presented with folded flags, helmets, and the IAFF's medal of honour.
As thousands collectively mourned this tragic loss the cause of the fire has been determined to be careless disposal of cigarettes.
